Victorian & "Elephant Man" Top Out Awards
For the first time since the beginning of the Marquee Awards, seven years ago, the Victorian Players emerged as the big winner among all area theaters with sixteen total awards.
The “7th Annual Marquee Awards” were held last night and along with Victorian bringing in the most honors, their production of “The Elephant Man” also topped the list for most awards for a single production this year with eight. The balance of their sixteen was made up of “Block 5” with four, “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure” with two and “Death Takes a Holiday” with two. The “Block 5” wins brings it’s total in two productions to fourteen.
Coming in a close second was the Oakland Center for the Arts with thirteen honors followed by the Youngstown Playhouse with ten. The big winner for the Oakland was “W;T” which pulled down five awards including Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Play to Molly Galano. Her counterpart on the Lead Actor in a Play side ended up in one of the many ties of the evening with awards going to John Cox for “Block 5” and John Pecano for “The Elephant Man.” On the musical side, the Best Actress and Best Actor awards went to Nikita Jones and Joshua Green, respectively, for their lead roles in “Ragtime,” produced by Top Hat Productions.
Top show honors were distributed as follows: Best Revival of a Play or Musical went to “Ragtime,” Best Special Theatrical Event was taken by “Block 5,” Best Play found another tie between “The Elephant Man” and “W;T,” with Best Musical surprisingly going to “Blues In the Night.” John Cox saw a second and third award for his direction of “Blues” and his co-direction with Christopher Fidram, of “Elephant Man.” Both of these gentlemen tied again in the Director of a Play category with Robert Dennick Joki for “W;T.”
The YACTA Committee also inducted three more local theater veterans into the Legends of the Theatre Hall of Honor. The class of 2010 consists of John & Rennie Griffith and Sis Soller, all of the Youngstown Playhouse. All three performed at the Playhouse during its heyday and devoted their lives to theater in the Mahoning Valley.

2009 MARQUEE AWARDS DATE SET
The Board of Governors of the Marquee Awards Committee has announced the date and location for the 2009 Marquee Awards. The awards will remain at the Saxon Club on Meridian Road in Youngstown. They will take place on Saturday, August 15, 2009. They also announced that there is a slight price adjustment due to a rise of pricing at the Saxon Club. Although most pricing is the same with individual tickets being priced at $20.00 the table pricing will be eliminated. Due to pricing increases, the Marquee Awards committee decided to eliminate the special table discount and make ALL prices $20.00 across the board.
Theatres are urged to keep this new pricing in mind and to plan on making their reservations early. The Board of Governors also announced that numerous policy changes have been made at the most recent committee meetings including an adjustment in the rating system which will lead to a larger change in that area next season.
