YOUNGSTOWN AREA COMMUNITY THEATRE AWARDS
TO HONOR ACTING & TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT IN LOCAL COMMUNITY THEATRE
THE YOUNGSTOWN AREA COMMUNITY THEATRE AWARDS were born out of a void which existed at the Youngstown Playhouse. The Playhouse had their own awards program for many years, known as The Arthur Awards. During a period of transition, at the Playhouse, the Arthur Awards were ignored and forgotten for two seasons. This was interpreted by many at the Playhouse as a major step backward at the local community theatre. For the actors and technicians who had spent countless hours, during those two seasons, producing and presenting Playhouse productions, the feeling was one of severe loss of recognition and gratitude for their work. A small dedicated group of actors and technicians got together to discuss the situation and decided to establish an independent awards program to pick up the slack from those two seasons and thus honor those who had worked so hard. Thus was born The Marquee Awards. The first presentation honored the two "lost" Playhouse seasons not as a replacement for The Arthurs, but rather as a temporary "stand-in." The first ceremony was so successful, however, that The Marquee Awards Committee decided to re-organize and enlarge the awards to encompass all of the local community theatres in Eastern Ohio and the immediate county of Western Pennsylvania. The Arthur Awards eventually returned to the Playhouse and have served to honor their productions as they always had in the past.
Our "Open-Door" Policy
We share the thoughts and concerns of many when they are concerned about the fairness of awards and keeping them open and above board. Our policy is to share as much information as possible with all interested parties. Naturally, some voting procedures as far as who votes for what people and what shows must remain confidential. All voting is done via secret ballot. We are very willing , however, to answer any questions you may have concerning how the awards are run and the policies and procedures which we follow. We welcome your questions.

The Reason for an Awards Program
The Marquee Awards serve many purposes. Sometimes people question the value of having an awards program since they feel that it tends to pit one actor or technician against another. There is much more to the Marquee Awards than that. First of all, it is a way of bringing all theatre people together even if only for one night. They essentially spend the entire year competing against each other in the sense that every show produced by every theatre is fighting for the same entertainment dollar. This one night together not only serves to renew acquaintances and to make new ones, but also to honor the achievements of all local theatre people from the preceding season. Good theatre fosters more good theatre. The fact that people are vying for the recognition of an award can increase the quality of productions across the board on every level.
The voting itself is a testament to the honoring of artistic achievement. The Nominations Committee consists of actors, directors, and technicians who do all of the voting on the Marquee Awards. Therefore, each winner has received votes from their own collegues thus bestowing on the winner the accolades of others in the business.
